LCL enhances energy security through wind power

Growing amid increasing pressure on energy and sustainability

LCL develops and operates data centres in Belgium for clients with high demands regarding reliability, scalability, and sustainability. As a Belgian data centre operator, LCL faces a dual challenge. On the one hand, energy consumption is increasing rapidly due to the expansion of its data centre infrastructure. On the other hand, clients—including international players such as Google—expect measurable progress in sustainability.

Rather than addressing this challenge solely by purchasing green electricity, LCL decided to invest in renewable energy generation in Belgium. Wind energy emerged as a logical next step, but also as a complex undertaking that extended far beyond the company’s core business, involving technical, legal, organisational, and financial considerations.

From initial exploration to permitting

Together with Encon, LCL chose a structured and risk-mitigating approach. We started with a targeted site screening and wind resource assessment to ensure that only the most promising locations were investigated further. Next, we conducted comprehensive feasibility studies evaluating technical performance, spatial compatibility, permitting prospects, and financial viability.

For the project in Gembloux, this resulted in a robust permit application that has since been approved. In parallel, we continue to support LCL in assessing additional sites and preparing the next project phases, including contract negotiations and overall project management.

From energy consumer to energy producer and owner

Thanks to this collaboration, LCL was able to invest in wind energy with confidence, without having to develop extensive in-house expertise. Today, the company has several tangible, approved projects, a clear pipeline of future opportunities, and a realistic roadmap towards self-generated renewable energy.

As a result, sustainability is no longer a stand-alone initiative but an integral criterion in strategic decision-making. LCL is strengthening its energy security, structurally reducing its dependence on market fluctuations, and gradually building its own portfolio of renewable energy assets in Belgium.
