The potential of wind energy in Flanders
Following the regulatory changes in 2023, it is now easier to obtain permits for onshore wind energy projects, particularly for businesses operating in industrial areas. At Encon, we are at the forefront of this transition, having secured permits for more than 200 MW of onshore wind capacity since 2019, with an impressive success rate of over 85%. In 2023, that success rate reached 100%, with Encon securing permits for 50 MW of wind energy capacity in that year alone. Moreover, more than 10% of all wind turbines permitted in Flanders were part of permit applications submitted by Encon. In addition, no fewer than 19 new wind turbines were commissioned in Flanders in 2023, three of which were realised with Encon’s support for our industrial clients.
It is also worth highlighting the evolution of wind turbine technology in recent years. While the trend has been towards larger turbines, with some onshore models now offering a rated capacity of more than 7 MW, not every site can accommodate these large turbines. As a result, medium-sized wind turbines have become increasingly popular in Flanders since the energy crisis and the regulatory changes introduced in 2023. With a rated capacity of up to 1.5 MW, these turbines offer a viable solution for businesses looking to protect themselves against volatile electricity prices over the next two decades.
