Sustainable property: insights from a session with Wanaka Partners

Last week, we at Encon were delighted to welcome Lisa Moerman from Wanaka Partners for an inspiring knowledge-sharing session on “Creating Sustainable Real Estate”. During the session, we explored in greater depth how sustainability is evolving today from an ambition or obligation into a genuine strategic asset within the property sector.

From sustainability to strategic added value

What became particularly clear during the session is that sustainability today goes far beyond mere certification or reporting. Property owners, investors and tenants are increasingly looking at the tangible impact of sustainable measures on the quality, future-proofing and attractiveness of buildings.

Sustainability is playing an increasingly significant role in:

  • the lettability and saleability of assets,
  • tenants’ expectations,
  • investors’ ESG objectives,
  • and the overall value of property portfolios.

Concrete actions make the difference

The importance of practical implementation was also emphasised. Ambitions and strategies are important, but the real impact only arises when sustainability is tangibly translated into concrete actions within buildings and portfolios.

During the session, various examples were discussed of initiatives that are becoming increasingly relevant in real estate today, such as:

  • charging infrastructure for electric vehicles
  • solar panels and renewable energy
  • sustainability and ESG data
  • water recovery
  • certifications such as BREEAM In-Use

Collaboration as a catalyst for sustainability

The meeting reaffirmed just how closely sustainability is intertwined with the future of real estate today. Not only in terms of regulation or environmental impact, but also in terms of economic and strategic value creation.

Thank you to Lisa Moerman for the inspiring insights and to all attendees for the engaging discussions.
